I recently found a note that I had written to my 3rd grade teacher telling her that I was probably going to be a rock star, but if that didn't work out, I would be a writer or a teacher like her.
I am still pretending to be a rock star (almost daily), but I have followed the career path of a teacher as I love to empower people! As a martial arts school owner and instructor, I have taught and coached people in fitness, wellness, mindfulness, and personal development for the past 15+ years. During this time, I’ve also had the opportunity to nurture my love of writing in creating all kinds of cool content such as curriculum, programs, blogs, marketing materials, etc.
With a desire to improve my writing and a passion for peace and equal rights, I went back to college in 2011 and got my Bachelor’s Degree in English and Peace and Conflict Studies. During this time, I had the opportunity to learn more about different forms of written and visual communication, and I discovered a passion for telling stories visually. I also learned a lot about philosophy, social theory, human behavior, and how narratives play a role in who we are, how we live, and how we treat others.
I learned that stories are powerful things! They can help and empower people or oppress and enslave them. So now, in addition to teaching martial arts, I use my written and visual communication skills to tell stories and to help people understand how stories affect their lives.
